Clover vs Square for a consignment store
Both ring up consigned items well, and neither tracks consignors on its own. The real differences are how you buy them, what they cost to run and a few details that matter for resale.
Plans, rates and hardware change, and Clover’s depend on who sells it to you. Check current terms before you buy.
Clover suits you if
- Your bank or payment company already offers it with a rate you like
- You want sturdy all-in-one devices at the counter
- You want apps from the Clover App Market
Square suits you if
- You’re opening soon and want to sign up today
- You prefer published rates and no contract
- Photos and sizes on each item matter to you
Clover or Square questions
Something else? Ask us.
Which is cheaper for a consignment store?
It depends on your sales and the rate you’re offered. Compare Square’s published rates with a written Clover quote that includes the software plan, the hardware and any contract terms.
Does Consignia work the same on both?
Yes. Sales split by vendor, booth rent, payout runs, markdowns, statements and the vendor portal are the same. The differences come from the register: Square returns arrive as their own orders, and photos also go onto your Square items.
Do I need a dedicated consignment POS instead?
Not with Consignia: Clover or Square runs the register and Consignia tracks consignors. Dedicated consignment systems replace the register entirely, which suits some stores; it’s a bigger switch.
I already have one of them. Should I switch?
Usually not. Both handle consignment equally well with Consignia, so keep the register your staff know and the rates you already have.
